Masaan is a 2015 Indian drama film directed by Neeraj Ghora. It was selected for the 68th Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section. The film follows four people in Varanasi - an industrialist looking to break ground on a new factory but failing due to environmental issues, an engineer facing unemployment after his skill set becomes obsolete, a young couple dealing with fertility problems and their daughter's death, and a motorcycle-rickshaw driver who falls in love with his maid. Masaan tells the story of four different lives interconnected by one man’s dream of building hydroelectric plants across India’s rivers. The film's title comes from the river Ganga and the word for cremation, "Masaan", which is also the name of Varanasi. The film unfolds against the backdrop of India’s energy issues and its looming environmental crisis.
